GIS 4006 Intro to Cartography & Map Design
In Module 1 we covered an introduction to cartography and map design. In this module we learned the basics of what cartography is followed by an assignment to practice utilizing the information covered. In the assignment students reviewed two maps, a map that was done well and a map that was done poorly. We then revied the maps thoroughly and put together a map critique. The following images are the maps I chose to use in my critique with a brief synopsis of my critique of each.
Good Map
This map shows the dominant ancestral population of each state and the counties that preside there. Outside of a few minor details this map was done very well. All the information one would need to determine the maps purpose and the data used are present. Another important aspect is the placement of the maps elements. This maps elements such as the legend and scale are all placed in areas that allow the viewer to see the data without cluttering it. While this map does have a few minor issues such as the text size and placement over all it was done very well and the viewer can tell what the purpose of the map is with no issues at all.
This map is an example of a poorly done map. The map attempts to show the population of individual state capitols. This map is highly problematic for several reasons primarily how cluttered it is. The creator attempted to show the state capitol populations with green circles that vary in size based on how large it is. This causes many issues because it completely clutters the map and it is unclear which circles represent the corresponding cities. On top of that it fails to provide the data showing the actual population that corresponds with circle size. Another major issue with this map is the lack of elements. There is no scale, the legend is present but it does not provide any clarity to what the symbology is representing. In conclusion this map is exceptionally poor, it fails to provide the viewer with details of its purpose and provides very little data that might help the viewer to understand what its purpose is.
As I reflect on this assignment it has help me in several ways. Primarily it has helped me to look at maps in a more detailed way. Being presented with a list of different criteria to look for in a map helps me to see what details are necessary for any future maps that I create. There are now elements I will be looking to add or subtract from my future map projects that should really help any viewer to interpret the data in a way that is more helpful and gets the objective to the forefront of my projects.
